Loaner Scope Program

Members of Austin Astronomical Society have access to AAS’s Loaner Scope program. AAS – through its Equipment Chair and team – keeps a limited number of telescopes available for members who may not have invested yet in a telescope, or who are trying out different telescopes and optics before settling on their own.

Package Specifications

There are 5 loaner packages available with identical specifications.  Each is available for a 4-month loan period.
  • 8”/f6 Orion Dobsonian telescope (w/o encoders)
  • Eyepiece: Hyperion 31mm 70 degree
  • Eyepiece: Explore Scientific 14mm 82 degree
  • Orion eyepiece case
  • Pocket Sky Atlas
  • Astronomical League Messier book
  • Chandler Planisphere
  • Antares Moon filter
  • Sky Publishing Moon Map
  • ScopeStuff 9v Red Flashlight
  • Laser Collimator 1.25″

Checkout Process


The checkout process is simple:

  • Borrower makes a Check-Out request, providing the information listed on the form below.
  • Borrower completes a loan agreement and provide a security deposit to AAS.
  • If the package will be used by a younger AAS member, adult supervision is required.
  • Upon return to the Loaner Program contact, AAS inspects the package.
  • If any damage or loss has occurred to the hardware, beyond normal wear & tear, you may lose your security deposit.  You may be subject to repair or replacement expenses.
