Did you get a new telescope recently, or have a telescope that you’re still discovering? We all know how you feel – experience has shown that first nights out with a new (or new-to-you) telescope can be daunting as you try to figure out set up, discover and understand what’s in the box, or even just wonder what to view. Too often, those first nights can leave you frustrated and the telescope remains unused.
To help you get started, AAS will offer a new telescope clinic during the Members Only Star Party on July 9th. Bring your telescope and all of the items that came in the box (batteries, instructions, eyepieces) to EEO at 5pm. A few members will walk through set up with you, discuss the common elements, and help you set up your telescope. Once the stars are out, we’ll key in on a few major objects.
Then, at our AAS Austin Under the Stars event on July 23rd, you’ll come out and, with an experienced partner, do a bit more: test your newfound skills by tracking the same objects as your fellow member and talk a bit about what you have been learning with the public.
- July 9 – EEO at Canyon of the Eagles, 5-10pm
- July 23 – Field, St. Stephens Episcopal School, 6pm-12pm
- Bring: you, your telescope and all its bits, and a device with SkySafari Pro, or the sky software of your choice!
