Austin Astronomical Society is a charitable educational organization of enthusiasts of all ages who are dedicated to the study and enjoyment of the skies as a hobby. The organization has existed in the Austin area for over 50 years and has held tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) entity since 1995. AAS members come from all walks of life, educational, and professional backgrounds. The Society welcomes members of all skill levels, and its General Assembly meetings are open to members and the general public alike. The Society has a social media presence on Facebook that is open to all to follow news and events of interest.
Within amateur astronomy are such diverse pursuits as visual observation, astrophotography, spectrographic measurement, radio astronomy, and amateur telescope making. AAS members tend towards visual observation and astrophotography as primary interests, and public outreach and learning the sky are the Society’s primary passions.

Members enjoy meeting in learning and social settings; and they especially enjoy opportunities to gather under open skies in the city, suburbs, and dark skies. AAS offers opportunities for advancement and recognition within the hobby through its affiliation with the Astronomical League, a national organization of amateur societies. Speakers at the General Assembly meetings include club members, graduate students, and internationally-recognized subject matter experts.
AAS members are also astronomy activists. Our concern for how light pollution affects everyone’s enjoyment of the night skies drives our affiliation with DarkSky International and DarkSky Texas. Through star parties, representation at community events, our presentation of the annual Austin Under the Stars event, hosting the annual Central Texas Star Party, and other activities, AAS shares its knowledge and passion with the public. Our members are active with schools, and parent and scouting organizations to ensure the future of the hobby and to proliferate science practices and information to the generations to follow.
