Join us for the AAS General Assembly meeting this Friday at 7:30 – 9:00 pm. We meet each month in room 2.136 of the Mechanical Engineering building on 204 E Dean Keaton St in Austin. There will be no Practical Astronomy session this month, so the meeting starts at 7:30.<\/p>\n
Our featured speaker will be the incomparable Don Olson, accompanied by Russell Doescher. <\/p>\n
Don Olson has been a professor of physics and astronomy at Texas State University since 1981. He is an alumni of Michigan State University where he earned his B.S. in Physics and of UC Berkely where he received his Ph.D. Over the last two decades, his Texas State University group has used astronomy to solve mysteries in art, history, and literature. Don\u2019s talk will describe topics collected in the recently-published book, Further Adventures of the Celestial Sleuth (Springer, 2018). Subjects include paintings by Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, J. M. W. Turner, and Caspar David Friedrich, analysis of photographs taken in Alaska by Ansel Adams, the campaigns of Braveheart in Scotland, events in World War II and the Korean War, and analysis of astronomical passages in literary works by Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Edgar Allan Poe. We are delighted to welcome back Dr. Olson and his esteemed associate Russell Doescher to AAS.<\/p>\n
