\"imgres\"AAS members are invited to a special event screening of the amazing new film,\u00a0Hidden Figures<\/strong><\/a>, on January 4th, 2017,\u00a07pm at Galaxy Highland Theater, 6700 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78752.<\/p>\n

Please join us for an early screening of\u00a0<\/span>Hidden Figures<\/b><\/a>, the amazing new film about Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and the unsung heroines of the US Space Program, and is based on Margot Lee Shetterly\u2019s non-fiction book Hidden Figures<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

As there are limited seats, we’re asking AAS members to sign up to reserve any ticket(s)<\/a>. You may add family members if they are part of your Family Membership. Please be at the theatre at 6:15pm to get your reserved ticket(s) from Joi Chevalier<\/a> outside the theater – tickets will not be given out after 6:45pm. If you reserve a spot and cannot attend please let Joi know asap, so the ticket can be given to someone else who\u2019d like to go!<\/p>\n

If you’re not familiar with the book or the new film, here’s a bit of information:<\/p>\n

“Hidden Figures”\u00a0recounts the story of the African-American mathematician,\u00a0<\/i>Katherine Johnson<\/i><\/span><\/a><\/span>,<\/i><\/span>\u00a0and her two colleagues,\u00a0<\/i>Dorothy Vaughan<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/i>Mary Jackson<\/i><\/span><\/a>, who, while working in the segregated\u00a0<\/i>West Area Computers<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0division of\u00a0<\/i>Langley Research Center<\/i><\/span><\/a>, helped\u00a0<\/i>NASA<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0catch up in the\u00a0<\/i>Space Race<\/i><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Using their calculations,\u00a0<\/i>John Glenn<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0became the first American astronaut to make a complete orbit of the Earth.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The film stars\u00a0<\/i>Taraji P. Henson<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0<\/i>Katherine Johnson<\/i><\/span><\/a>, the African American physicist, space scientist, and mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for\u00a0<\/i>Project Mercury<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the 1969\u00a0<\/i>Apollo 11<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0flight to the Moon. The film also features\u00a0<\/i>Octavia Spencer<\/i><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/i><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>Kevin Costner<\/i><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>Kirsten Dunst<\/i><\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/i>Jim Parsons<\/i><\/span><\/a>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
